Job Summary

The Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, processing accounting transactions, and ensuring compliance with Ethiopian financial regulations, tax laws, and internal control policies. The role supports sound financial management by preparing financial reports, managing accounts payable and receivable, supporting audits, and ensuring timely statutory reporting. Success in this position ensures financial accuracy, transparency, compliance, and effective decision-making across SITCO operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Record, verify, and process all financial transactions including payments, receipts, journal entries, and bank transactions in accordance with approved accounting standards and company policies.
• Prepare and maintain accurate books of accounts, general ledger, subsidiary ledgers, and supporting schedules.
• Manage accounts payable and receivable, ensuring timely invoicing, collections, and supplier payments.
• Prepare bank reconciliations, cash reconciliations, and monthly account reconciliations.
• Ensure compliance with Ethiopian tax laws, including VAT, Withholding Tax, Payroll Tax, and other statutory obligations.
• Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual tax returns to the Ethiopian Revenue and Customs Authority (ERCA).
• Support preparation of monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with IFRS and local regulatory requirements.
• Coordinate with internal departments to ensure accurate cost allocation, expense control, and budget compliance.
• Maintain proper documentation and filing of accounting records for audit, compliance, and reporting purposes.
• Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, responding to audit queries, and implementing audit recommendations.
• Monitor advances, petty cash, and employee expense claims to ensure proper utilization and timely settlement.
• Assist in budget preparation, financial analysis, and management reporting as required.
• Ensure strict confidentiality, integrity, and ethical handling of financial information.
• Support the Finance Manager in strengthening internal controls and improving accounting processes.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
• Minimum of 3 – 5 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in a trading, manufacturing, or multi-sector company.
• Practical experience working with Ethiopian tax systems, ERCA reporting, and statutory compliance requirements.

Required Key Skills and Knowledge

• Strong knowledge of Ethiopian accounting practices, tax laws, and financial regulations.
• Working knowledge of IFRS and financial reporting standards.
• Proficiency in accounting software / ERP systems and Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
• High attention to detail with strong analytical and numerical skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work under pressure.
• Strong organizational, documentation, and record-keeping skills.
• Good communication and coordination skills with internal and external stakeholders.
• Fluency in English and Amharic; knowledge of Afaan Oromo is an added advantage.

Preferred Attributes

• Experience working in a diversified business environment such as trading, manufacturing, logistics, or services.
• Familiarity with SITCO-relevant operations such as import/export accounting, inventory accounting, and cost control.
• Exposure to audit processes and implementation of audit recommendations.
• High level of integrity, confidentiality, accountability, and professionalism.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while supporting team objectives.
